The Wayland Free Public Library lines up virtual author talks throughout the year that you can watch from the comfort of your own home via Zoom (register at waylandlibrary.org/events). The next talk is “Shatterproof” on Thursday, Aug. 28 from 2–3 p.m.

Are you working too much but feel like it’s never enough? Have you turned the act of pretending you’re “fine” into an art form? Does self-care feel like one more item on your already long to-do list? If you answer “yes” to these questions, you might want to tune into this Zoom talk.

We’ve been taught that resilience is the secret to navigating life’s most difficult moments, but according to New York Times bestselling author, organizational psychologist and researcher Dr. Tasha Eurich, there’s one problem with this assumption. Scientifically, resilience isn’t an unlimited resource, especially with the growing pressure and uncertainty we’re experiencing today.

Whether you’re grappling with work stress, personal challenges, or the chaos of everyday life, “Shatterproof” offers an urgent alternative to stoic endurance as the only strategy for survival. Combining cutting-edge research, practical tools, and insights from her struggle with a life-defining health crisis, Dr. Eurich will overturn your beliefs about what it takes to thrive through adversity, offering a scientifically supported system to help you feel better, do better, and live better than before.

Other recent author talks offered by the library include “The Invention of Charlotte Brontë: A New Life” and “The Pairing.” Based entirely on rarely seen private letters, ”The Invention of Charlotte Brontë” by Graham Watson sheds new light on the dramatic events of Brontë’s turbulent last years of grief, fulfillment and tragedy. “The Pairing” is a sizzling drama and romantic comedy by New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston. Two estranged execs who find themselves thrown together for three weeks of stunning views and luscious flavors in the most romantic cities of France, Spain, and Italy agree to a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first, and then to a full-on European hookup competition.

Upcoming talks will feature Gabe Henry (“Enough is Enuf”) on September 2, Leigh Bardugo (“Six of Crows” on October 9, and Philippa Gregory, “queen of British historical fiction,” on October 29.
