In an age when local newspapers are vanishing, communities have been left adrift in a sea of silence. Beginning this week and on every other Friday, our complementary, high-quality local news publication will reach all 5,200 homes and businesses in Wayland. The response from our community has been overwhelmingly positive. Approximately 50 people recently participated in Trivia Night on March 7th at the 110 Grill.
So, who exactly is behind the Wayland Post? We’re a nonprofit founded by a passionate group of local volunteers who recognized that without a dedicated source for community news, our neighbors might be uninformed about the vibrant life on the other side of their front door. So much happens every day, and in a town known for its curious and engaged residents, accurate, connected information is not a luxury—it’s essential for community identity.
Our mission is to provide in print and online, an independent, balanced and precise news that helps every resident make informed decisions about issues and opportunities that contribute to their own betterment and that of our community and its culture.
Before launching our paper, we conducted a survey; approximately 10% of the town highlighted a strong desire for more in-depth coverage of local issues, schools, events, sports, town government, emerging businesses and analysis of regional issues. People also want clear insights into how town decisions are made and how public funds are used. To meet this need, we print a multi-page newspaper bi-weekly on Thursday, to ensure it’s delivered to your doorstep the following day. Because we have nonprofit status, the cost to mail our paper is minimal, and depending on the number of printed pages, printing costs are two to three times higher.
Currently, the newspaper is staffed with a few hard-working and committed volunteers. In the near future, the Wayland Post plans to grow with a dedicated team of three full-time staff members (editor, assistant editor, and writer), and part time sales, graphics and technical support. This translates to an estimated annual budget of $425,000 to publish a weekly newspaper.
Every published story is a product of close engagement with our neighbors, whether we’re spotlighting community heroes, exploring community initiatives or profiling local businesses. Our local businesses are a vital part of our culture. We offer them a platform to connect with our readers, share their unique stories, and contribute to the local economy. Their stories not only enrich our news, they also strengthen community bonds.
To keep our operation thriving, we rely on the generosity of our community for support rather than charging subscription fees.
