March always feels like a turning point. We begin to notice the small signs that spring is on the way, like longer days, a bit more light in the afternoons, and a few buds poking through. At the same time, we know that winter may still have a few cold (and snowy) surprises left for us. It’s a month of transition and a reminder of how comforting it is to have places to gather, connect, and feel part of a community no matter what the outdoors may feel like.
Here at the COA, it also brings our annual longtime favorite event — the St. Patrick’s Day luncheon. It’s a day that fills our space with joy and laughter, and this year was no different.
We kicked things off with a lively toast, raising glasses of sparkling cider to the room. “Slainte!” The cheer rang out warmly, setting the perfect tone for the afternoon ahead. From that first moment, it was clear that this would be another COA celebration to remember.
The toast gave way to a spectacular live performance by Boston’s premier Irish showband, The Black Velvet Band. Their music filled every corner of the room, from beloved Irish tunes that had guests swaying in their seats to American standards that had many singing along. The energy was infectious, and the smiles were contagious. A highlight of the afternoon came when our very own Pauline DiCesare took the spotlight to deliver a performance alongside the band.
As the music played on, guests helped themselves to a fully loaded baked potato bar — a hearty, crowd-pleasing spread that kept everyone well-fed and happy. Mock Irish Coffees made the rounds, and the room buzzed with the kind of easy laughter and warm conversation that only happens when good people share a good meal.
We were absolutely delighted to welcome over 60 seniors to this year’s luncheon, including many familiar faces and some wonderful new friends. Events like this are a reminder of why the COA exists, not just to offer programs and services, but to create moments of genuine connection and celebration for older adults in our town.
We’d like to give a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped make this afternoon so special — from our dedicated staff and volunteers to every guest who walked through our doors and brought their St Patty’s Day spirit with them.
If you haven’t yet visited the Council on Aging in our new space, we invite you to join us! With monthly events, activities, and programs for adults 60 and older, there is always something to look forward to. We hope to see you at our next gathering. Your spot at the table is waiting!
