The Fire Department declared the start of open burning season on Jan. 15, continuing through May 1.

Residents must obtain a burn permit each year from the Fire Department to comply with state and local laws. Visit www.wayland.ma.us/fire-department-ems/pages/open-burning to apply for a new burn permit.

The Fire Department cautioned residents that weather this past fall was extremely dry, causing brush and wildfires across the state. Residents should remain cautious and use sound judgment during the open burning season. For safety information visit www.mass.gov/info-details/open-burning-safety.

As always, in the event of an emergency call 911.
