As the summer winds down, student-athletes at Wayland High School are lacing up their cleats and sneakers in preparation for the start of the fall sports season. With tryouts set to begin in mid-August, players across multiple sports are already hard at work getting ready for the season.
Many teams have organized captain’s practices, which are optional player-led workouts and are not run by coaches. These sessions give returning athletes a chance to practice and allow incoming players to build relationships with teammates before official tryouts begin.
For girls’ soccer, captain’s practices include fitness workouts and evening turf sessions on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the high school. The girls’ volleyball team will hold captain’s practices in the field house on August 11, 13, and 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, other teams such as the field hockey team posted a series of summer workouts to stay active and prepare for the upcoming season.
Official tryouts and practices begin on August 15 for football and golf, and on August 18 for crew, cross country, field hockey, girls’ volleyball, soccer, and other sports.
All students interested in playing a fall sport must register online through FamilyID by August 11. In addition, student-athletes must have a physical examination on file that is valid within 13 months of their last physical.
