WayCo players cap season with All Star Game

For WayCo Softball League’s eight teams, mid-August means it’s time to determine the summer’s championship team. But the Cochituate Ballfield lights go dim for the final time when the two All-Star teams, West Plain and Main, meet on Wednesday, August 13.

In the past few years, the night has evolved into a tribute to the late Eliza Norton, 10, and William McInnis, 7, Wayland elementary students who both passed suddenly. As a nonprofit organization, WayCo also recognizes the Norton and McInnis families for their countless contributions to the Wayland community.

This year, two community members have stepped forward to sponsor the team’s shirts that showcase the young children’s favorite colors and team numbers, teal and 37 for Eliza, and orange and 7 for William. Both children were known for their love of athletics and spirited approach to team play.

Thanks to the generosity of residential realtor Gina Anderson of MGS Group Real Estate in Wellesley and Marci Alvarado, principal broker for Commercial Property Advisors of Natick, costs for the team shirts and the All-Star Pizza Party will be covered. Both Wayland residents are committed to the summer league, with Alvarado’s son Nico being a veteran player. Mac, Anderson’s 11-year-old son, is waiting for the day five years out when he’ll step to the plate for WayCo’s youngest team (rising high school juniors).

The All-Star game is Wednesday, August 13, at 6:45 p.m. at Cochituate Ballfield (barring any rain dates).  Schedule changes will be posted on Instagram (@waycosports). Fans are also welcome to watch the playoff series on Wednesday, August 6, and the championship series on Monday, August 11. Games begin at 6:30 pm.

WayCo wraps up its 18th year with 112 young guys participating two nights a week. Players are age 15 to 25, with all age groups coming together for competitive games, socializing, and spirited fun.
