Wayland sports roundup: football, volleyball, soccer

It was a full week for Wayland High School athletics as fall teams continued their Dual County League schedules, highlighted by strong showings from the volleyball and soccer squads and a tough road night for football.

Football
Wayland traveled to Concord-Carlisle on Friday, October 10, falling 42–14 to the Patriots. The Warriors, coming off a high-scoring contest against Bedford earlier in the month (a 68–40 loss), continue to show offensive spark but are searching for defensive consistency as they move deeper into league play.

Volleyball
The girls’ volleyball team remains one of the week’s bright spots, sweeping both Acton-Boxborough (3–0) and Cambridge Rindge and Latin (3–0) in straight sets. Earlier in the week, Wayland battled Weston but came up short, 3–1. The victories over Acton-Boxborough and Cambridge Rindge and Latin push the Warriors further up the DCL standings as the postseason picture begins to take shape.

Boys’ soccer
Wayland boys’ soccer earned an important 3–0 win over Acton-Boxborough on October 7 before battling to a 1–1 draw with a strong CRLS team two days later. Colton Alhart found the back of the net off a Brady Babineau assist in the tie. Despite a narrow 1–0 loss to Norwell earlier in the week, the Warriors continue to show balance on both sides of the field as they eye a tournament berth.

Girls’ soccer
The girls’ squad dropped a tight 2–1 match to Cambridge Rindge and Latin on October 9 but continues to compete hard through a demanding DCL slate. Earlier action included matches with Acton-Boxborough and Lincoln-Sudbury, with the Warriors focusing on converting more offensive chances heading into midseason.

Field hockey & middle school
Field hockey split its week with games against Ashland and Concord, while Wayland’s middle school teams were also active, hosting Sudbury and Watertown in cross country, field hockey and soccer contests.
