Firefighters put out a two-alarm fire at a home on Leary Street on Oct. 30.
A Wayland fire crew responded to the scene of the two-story home near the Wayland Middle School at 31 Leary St. shortly before 12:30 p.m., observing smoke coming from the roof of the house.
The crew on the scene sounded a second alarm to bring more firefighters to the scene, and immediately began an aggressive interior attack.
The crews determined that the smoke and fire were coming from inside a portion of the wall where pipes were located, running through each floor of the home. The firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, without further incident.
One person was home at the time of the fire, and was able to safely leave before the arrival of first-responders.
Mutual aid was provided by the Weston, Framingham, Natick, and Sudbury fire departments. The Wellesley and Lincoln fire departments provided station coverage.
“The prompt response by our personnel, and the mutual assistance from neighboring departments, meant that overall operations went very well,” said Fire Chief Neil McPherson. “The good news is that nobody was seriously injured.”
One Wayland firefighter was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, but McPherson reported that this firefighter should be back at work soon.
The home suffered significant smoke and water damage, totaling approximately $200,000, according to the Wayland Fire Department.
Two residents were displaced by the fire, and are being assisted by family and friends.
A preliminary investigation suggested that the fire was potentially a result of ongoing home renovations, according to the Fire Department.
The incident remains under investigation by the Wayland Fire Department and the District 14 Fire Investigation Team.
