House Plaque Project

Bradford Carver reported difficulties in maintaining an accurate record of historic homes with plaques. He agreed to compile and digitize a uniform list. Gardner-Westcott emphasized the need for document security and required Carver to sign for any files removed from the office.

250th Anniversary Events

The commission reviewed proposed activities for the 250th anniversary. Tonya Largy suggested a talk on the African American experience in Wayland, possibly at a cemetery. Gardner-Westcott mentioned an upcoming reenactment project and proposed co-sponsoring lectures with the library to share costs.

Largy had attempted to contact a Native American speaker but had not received a response. The commission considered seeking assistance from the Natick Historical Society, which has hosted Nipmuc speakers in the past.

Stones Bridge Project

The commission discussed a $80,000 change order for the Stones Bridge restoration. The PMBC was scheduled to review the issue. Gardner-Westcott questioned whether the additional funds would cover revised landscaping plans, replacing bushes with native flower boxes. The funding request will be addressed at Town Meeting in April.

Archaeological Protections

Concerns over unauthorized metal detecting and digging on town land were raised. Chief Berman advised that a local bylaw, similar to Acton’s, would be necessary. A proposal for such a bylaw is expected for the 2026 Town Meeting.

Signal Cabinet Project

The effort to wrap the rail trail signal cabinet with historical graphics stalled when Alltype, the vendor, withdrew after an alternative 3M vinyl material change was suggested. Carver advised requesting Alltype’s detailed measurements and test results before engaging a new vendor. The commission is considering an alternative contractor, with Bryant providing a lead on a Hopkinton firm.

Rail Trail Interpretive Signs and Funding

Concerns arose over the handling of Town Center gift funds originally allocated for a rail trail interpretive site. Gardner-Westcott expressed concern that Select Board member Tom Fay was attempting to reallocate funds for the 250th anniversary without commission input. The commission agreed that discussions with Town Manager Michael McCall were needed to clarify the fund’s intended use.

Volunteer Brush Clearing and Future Projects

The commission unanimously approved a volunteer brush-clearing event at the rail trail’s engine house site on May 3 and 4. Conard will coordinate with the DPW for a preliminary clearing. The meeting concluded with discussion of new historical markers around town. The commission will next meet on April 14.
