Calendar Policy
The mission of the Wayland Post is to keep Wayland residents informed, engaged, and connected, and in that spirit we welcome submissions to our Community Calendar.
Calendar listings run at the discretion of the editor. We focus on events in Wayland that are generally open to the public and are free or reasonably priced. Because there are many of these, we rarely have space for out-of-town events, and we cannot consider those without a clear Wayland connection.
Our Community Calendar does not list events promoting the products or services of for-profit businesses, nor admissions-focused events sponsored by private schools. We will consider publishing Calendar listings for fundraisers or events that benefit local community and nonprofit organizations.
Like the website and newspaper we publish, the Wayland Post Calendar is non-partisan: we do not accept paid political advertising, and we refrain from publishing listings that promote national political activities, causes, and candidates via rallies, phone banking, and fundraising events. We will, however, accept listings for local and free candidate coffees or meet-ups for those running in Wayland town elections, or running for offices that represent Wayland residents.
Calendar submissions should be no more than 60 words and include the event’s time, date, place, cost (if applicable), and a very short, very clear description. Submissions must use the form on our website, which can be accessed here: https://www.waylandpost.org/submission/
For both online and print publication, listings are due at least one week in advance. Due to our production schedule, we can’t always accommodate late listings. Submissions may be edited for length and clarity.
Letters to the Editor
Opinions expressed must be the writers’ own.
Letters (max 400 words) from Wayland residents must be emailed to editor@waylandpost.org by 5 p.m. on Friday for the next biweekly print edition (see our publication schedule) and must include the writer’s name, street address, and phone for verification.
One letter per writer per month.
Letters are published with the writer’s name and street (anonymous letters will not be published).
Letters are published at the editor’s discretion and may be edited for length, style, clarity, or to remove personal attacks, unverified or libelous claims, offensive language, or other inappropriate content.
Responses to Wayland Post articles or previous letters must cite the headline and date of the item referenced without naming prior writers.
Election-related letters will not appear in the issue immediately before Election Day.
Ethics
The Wayland Post adheres to the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) code of ethics, which is published and may periodically be updated at www.spj.org/spj-code-of-ethics.

We subscribe to standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News:

We accept gifts, grants, and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support.
Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.

Political Coverage and Advertising
As a non-profit news organization, the Wayland Post does not endorse candidates for office or stances on electoral issues and, under IRS guidelines, does not favor any candidate for public office or other electoral issue in our news coverage or other action.
The Wayland Post avoids advocating for specific public policies, except that we will be advocates for basic human rights, democracy and the First Amendment, and for the right to free speech and a free press. While we may have a point of view on an issue or set of issues, we will be transparent to the public about our approach and will refrain from advocating or lobbying for action on specific electoral policies.
The Wayland Post will accept paid political advertisements. Such political advertisements will not be accepted in the edition of the newspaper published in the week immediately before an election.
We will not accept press releases or other material generated by or at the behest of political campaigns. We may write and publish articles in our newspaper that refer to political campaigns; in such articles, we will always strive to be as balanced and fair as possible to all sides of an issue and to all candidates.
Public Safety Log Entries
Public Safety and Similar Information
Default disclosure
Publish full name, age, and municipality.
Omit precise street number unless its inclusion materially advances the story (e.g., crash occurred in front of the arrestee’s home).
Standard disclaimer
End every arrest item with a one-sentence note: “All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.”
Consistent exceptions
Withhold names for juveniles, victims of sexual assault, or cases under active mental-health protective orders.
If you choose anonymity for a particular category (e.g., first-offense OUIs without injuries), apply it to all local and non-local arrestees to avoid perceived favoritism.
Follow-up commitment
When you name a suspect, commit to running the disposition (dismissed, plea, acquittal, conviction) once it becomes available reflecting AP’s fairness rationale.
Transparency with readers
Publish the policy on your website and include a link or brief reference in print. Invite feedback so the community understands why you handle identities the way you do.
Backround
Under Massachusetts law the names, street addresses, ages and charges of anyone who is arrested appear in the public daily log, which is itself a public record.
Most professional stylebooks say it is permissible—but not always obligatory—to publish all of that information. The decision is ultimately an ethical one: balance the public’s right to know against any disproportionate harm to the individual.
Large Massachusetts newsrooms (e.g., Boston Globe) typically publish the arrestee’s name + age + city/town for an OUI. Hyper-local outlets (Patch) vary: some still print the full street address, others now withhold the name for “routine” OUIs. Even within the same chain, practice now ranges from full disclosure to partial anonymity. The shift mirrors AP’s newer guidance on small-scale crime coverage.
Wayland Post will adopt a middle-ground policy: name, age and town only, no house number, with a standing disclaimer that charges are allegations until proven guilty.
Wayland Post is allowed to print the identifying details; the statute neither compels nor forbids publication—it only guarantees access.
Requirements of the Law
M.G.L. c. 41, § 98F obliges every police department to keep a daily log that “record[s] … the names, addresses of persons arrested and the charges against such persons arrested.” The log is explicitly a public record. malegislature.gov
The Secretary of State’s Public Records Guide confirms that journalists may freely publish material taken from these logs; restrictions on using names/addresses for solicitation do not apply to bona-fide news reporting. sec.state.ma.us

News Production System
The News Production System (NPS) was used to produce the Municipal Meetings Recaps. NPS, developed by the Wayland Post, includes the use of artificial intelligence and automation programs. These programs are used to record, transcribe, and summarize town government meetings and events. Municipal Meetings Recaps are reviewed and edited by Wayland Post staff members prior to publication. Many of the meeting recordings were produced by WayCAM, whose government on-demand recordings can be viewed at: www.waycam.tv/government-on-demand
