Economic Development Committee launches surveys on Route 20 revitalization

The Economic Development Committee (EDC) is seeking input from residents and business owners on ways to help guide the revitalization of the Boston Post Road/Route 20 corridor near the Wayland Town Center, where many storefronts have sat vacant for years.

Two separate surveys—one for residents and another for local business and property owners—are now available online.

The resident survey asks about preferences for future business types, infrastructure updates, and possible zoning changes. Questions cover topics like adding fast casual restaurants, small businesses near the adjacent Massachusetts Central Rail Trail, and improvements to sidewalks, streetlamps, and signage.

The business survey focuses on the challenges facing commercial property owners and businesses. It includes questions about the importance of allowing drive-throughs or pick-up windows, interest in mixed-use developments, and potential changes to zoning that might support expansion or renovations.

Both surveys aim to gather community feedback on how to reduce vacancies, improve streetscapes, and attract businesses that align with the town’s needs. Survey responses will help inform the EDC’s recommendations for future development in the Route 20 area.

To participate, residents and business owners can access the surveys on the town’s website at https://www.wayland.ma.us/home/news/wayland-economic-development-surveys. The surveys will close in December, and participants will have the option to receive updates on the results and next steps for revitalization efforts.
