Summer fun on Dudley Pond with ice cream and music

It’s not summer in Wayland without a good time at Dudley Pond, and this summer was no exception as residents enjoyed the annual Dudley Pond Association ice cream social on July 12 on and near Mansion Beach.

Volunteers created free ice cream sundaes and other treats to order as attendees of all ages from Wayland and surrounding towns sampled cool summer treats and enjoyed the fine weather. “It was a perfect day and such a lovely spot,” said Lisa Jacobs, the association’s secretary.

Some attendees went boating while others took a dip in the pond or shopped the organization’s selection of clothing and other merchandise. Proceeds fund programs aimed at weed management and other programs to enhance the health of Dudley Pond.

At 4 p.m., Captains Steve and Bob tied their pontoon boats together to form a stage for the Dirty Water Brass Band, named after the famous Charles River refrain (“Love that dirty water — oh, Boston, you’re my home!”). The Boston-based street band considers itself the center of a “movable block party” such as the one created by Dudley Pond boaters that afternoon. The band was transported around the pond while playing selections for almost two hours. Followers joined them on pontoon boats, kayaks, and paddleboards.

One attendee who happened upon the event commented, “Who knew there was this gem of a pond and such a nice community to support it? And ice cream sundaes to boot!”
