Young Warriors off to a fast start

ayland/Weston Youth Football is on the rise, rolling out new opportunities for its youngest athletes. This fall, the program launched standalone tackle teams for fourth- and fifth-graders, marking a significant step forward in player development.

The move comes as the league begins teaching tackle football as early as fourth grade. By starting younger, players learn proper techniques and fundamentals at a safer, developmental pace — helping them build confidence and reduce injury risk down the road.

The new fifth-grade squad already looks the part. Seventeen players from Wayland have powered the team to a 3–1 start, with wins over Foxborough, Waltham and Franklin. Head Coach Bryan Mueller leads the group, supported by Defensive Coordinator Greg Lyng, Offensive Coordinator Robert Mosurick, and assistants Anthony D. Amara, Carmen D’Amico, CJ Annunciata, and Tyler Castagno.

Players report in early August for conditioning and stamina training before the start of school. Once classes start, practice runs about four hours a week, with games on weekends that draw families and neighbors to the field.

The action continues Saturday, Oct. 18, when the program hosts its next home game. Fans are encouraged to come out and support both the new fourth- and fifth-grade squads as they continue strong debut seasons.

Football doesn’t go far without cheerleaders. Wayland-Weston Youth Cheers
will host a Cheer Showcase on Friday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the Wayland High School Field House. The event will feature all three youth cheer squads plus the Wayland High School team as they unveil their competition routines.
