Pipe failure at PFAS facility causes town to temporarily tap into MWRA water

On August 26, 2025, the Wayland Water Division experienced a pipe failure at the Temporary PFAS Treatment System located at the Happy Hollow wells. As a result, those wells were taken offline for repairs.

Shortly after the incident, the Water Division contacted the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s Drinking Water Division to request an Emergency Declaration for a Water Supply Emergency due to a loss of source. MassDEP and the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority granted permission to activate Wayland’s Emergency Interconnection with the MWRA at approximately 5:00 p.m. on August 26.

While repairs to the piping system at the Happy Hollow wells are being made, the Water Division will operate the emergency MWRA interconnection until the PFAS treatment system can be returned to regular operation.
