March 25, 2026 - Historical Commission
We will call our meeting to order for the historical commission, a special meeting with
one topic only on our agenda today, the signage for Dudley Woods and signage for Castle Gate
Pillars.
So the meeting is being recorded, and it will be made available to the public on WACAM
as soon as possible after the meeting.
The public will be excluded from executive sessions.
Pursuant to Chapter 2 of the Acts of 2025, this meeting will be conducted in person and
or via remote access in accordance with applicable law.
If this meeting has only remote access, no in-person attendance by members or the public
will be permitted.
If this meeting has remote access, one may watch or participate remotely with the meeting
link.

So when required by law or allowed by the chair, persons wishing to provide public comment or
otherwise participate in the meeting, may do so at the meeting location, and public comment

And you all folks are aware of Article DD.
And yes, but the problem is we only have one item on our agenda today because this is a special
call meeting and it's only the signage for Dudley Woods.
And you're going to talk about a school, possible school.
Well, just, I guess, awareness.
Just, you know, that doesn't have to be included in your meeting today, but just if I make a
public comment about awareness for future reference of your discussions.
Okay, are you asking that it'd be put on the agenda for the next meeting?
No, just us as a neighborhood group concerned with Article DD for a multitude of reasons.
And you folks as the Historical Society Commission.
Just wanted to make sure that you're aware of Article DD and the spending of $200,000 to
study by the selectmen if the school committee releases the land.
And if it is built, the concerns of many things, but just not knowing if something's built, what
will be built, what magnitude, like another Oxbow or another Turkey Hill or just singular
homes.
But just as far as the makeup of Wayland and the architectural buildings on Holiday Road,
the mid-century deck houses.
And there are some of those, unfortunately, as well.
But we're just all concerned about the future of the land, the future of our neighborhoods,
future of the town as far as, you know, more people, more schools, more kids, more wear and
care on our fire and police department to traffic.
So I just was asked to come today to make awareness and just let you all know what we're thinking
about.

Then, Castle Gate and Dudley Woods.
Anne, we'll turn it over to you.
So these that you have before you represent the changes that were requested at our last
meeting.
And I think, you know, they kind of speak for themselves, but if you've had a chance to review
the signs, I'd be interested in your thoughts.
And let's start with Dudley Kahn's sign.
We didn't have a photo of the camps on the last version, so that's been added.
And in the copy, there is a description of what that means when the camps are.
There was a question about whether we could enlarge the photo of the ice house so you could
see it better.
It can't really reproduce at a larger size than what you see here.
And in all of the versions of the photo, we have the ice houses off the edge, as you see it is here.
So we don't really have a way to make it more central, but I think it does.
I think you can certainly see how big it is, particularly where there are some small figures on the shoreline.
They give you a sense of scale compared to that huge building.
Regarding the photo of Dudley, I have not been able to reach her daughter yet.
I've left a couple of messages, so I'd appreciate any advice or help from anybody who might know her.
I may see her tonight.

The message I got from them was to use our judgment.
And so technically we have, I think, the right to publish it.
But I think it would be much better if we have the approval permission.

And what I'd like to do is suggest that this caption of hers has a little more context,
that it says something like Cachituate resident Dorothy Lee comma 1942.
I think this one was taken when she was living in Natick.

Before she married.
Before she married Ed Lee.
She lived in Natick.
So she's not a Cachituate resident per se.
At the time of the photo.
But she was a long time Cachituate.
Yes, she was after that.

I was going to say, I suddenly realized this morning.
Nowhere does it say historical commission on here.
On any of the signs that give us credit for creating the signs.
And I thought maybe underneath town of Wayland historical commission as a second line.

As a possibility.
To keep it simple and so forth.
I think that's a good spot for an idea.
And then as Rick pointed out, it didn't show a lot of the ice house.
And we were able to find a house.
It showed a little bit more of the corner.
So it appears you can see the fact that it's actually a building.
Whereas before it was this kind of stripes.
And I think it shows better the height of the building.
You see what I'm talking about, Rick?
As far as that picture is concerned, you could crop it and make it a tad bigger.
It was scanned at 600 to 800 CPI.
So, but apparently she feels she can't do that.
This is what Carol has said to me.
That it is as big as she feels it can reasonably be and be of good quality.
And then the photograph of the camps, which thank you.
I appreciate that.
There were two photos of the camp campsite.
And one of them, the newspaper printed out a cropped version of what you may have had the first.

Of the canoe in front of the camps.
And they had cropped it and enlarged it.
And I thought, well, they can do it in their newspaper.
What can we do it on the sign?
I don't know.
But it shows the houses, the building better than this particular one does, which shows sort of something in the.
I'm sure it looks better when it's bigger, but it's difficult on this size to envision it.

I don't know what you're referring to with the newspaper photo.
Well, I think I sent you the last time I sent you the houses, the camps.
There was one in the newspaper, which I scanned first, and then I found the actual picture.

I figured that was better.
And I scanned that and I cropped it and scanned it in a larger version so that it matched the newspaper one.
And I believe the original small, it's a postcard, original small postcard was scanned previously and sent in.
Do we know where the old photo exactly was taken?
Which is the camps?

Well, this one, I believe, is taken from 27 looking toward the pond.
It's also a postcard, I believe.
And the other one is somebody on the pond taking picture of a communal people and the camps are in the background.
But when I enlarged it and scanned it, you could see the clothes hanging on the clothesline and the different sizes and different shapes of the houses and so forth.
So, Kay, are you talking about this photo?
Exactly.
And what I did is I enlarged it so that those houses in the background could be seen and the clothes hanging on the clothesline and so on and so forth,
which is what the newspaper had done when they published theirs.
Okay.
That's a personal choice.
I realize that not everybody may agree with me for that one.
But...
Right, because this one apparently shows a meadow in the foreground if they're facing the pond.
But this one is also a postcard.
I believe it is.
Well, with that written across the bottom, I would assume...
I like the fact that it's identified, you know, originally on the postcard with the script.
Both of them are.
And I almost want to say that that is what is not Dudley Woods.
That almost looks like grass to me.
It is.
And why do we have so much grass and we won't find any buildings?
Well, that's what we were discussing, Michael.

Is it possible to show more buildings and less grass?
That's, I think, the question more than anything else.
So that's where all the houses are now, is where the grass is in the old photo, right?
I don't think so.
I have a feeling that the buildings here are where the houses are today and that this is
now Dudley Woods.
Because if you go through Dudley Woods, they're not old trees.
In fact, you can see a cellar location for one of the houses there.
Well, I can certainly ask her to substitute the canoe picture.
If it's, I mean, I, what you sent me, I have marked as 300 CPI.
So.

Now, if you can enlarge that on your screens.

So basically what it shows is maybe the tip of the canoe so that you can tell you're
out on the water when it's a boat there.
And then the houses behind it are enlarged.
And the clothes are hanging on the clothesline.
So you can see that it is an area where people are living in the buildings are different
shapes back and forth.
They're not.
But there's one big house and then there are a few smaller camps around.
So that's not. Trying to think whether that's not. Okay. Any information about how many of these houses still exist? Well, you had asked me for an ad on the camps. And I sent you what I found in the directories. But today, when I was looking at the Dudley Pond changing views. It's put out by the Dudley Pond Association. Right there. Easy peasy. Right in front of me is. Well, I'll point it this way too. I will. Okay. I'll go a lot. Where is that from? This is called Dudley Pond's changing view. No, no. I mean, where's the ad? The ad is a brochure of early attachment for Dudley Pond development and is found at the Wayland Public Library. So I don't have it. And this says that it's actually 1913 that this is for. And it talks about campsites and acre plots and how to get there by a trolley. By electrics. Yeah. But in order to fit on here, I don't know how much of that is really. Yeah. It would end up. It gets so small. I don't think you'd be able to read it. Even at 600. Yeah. Not CPI. I don't know what she could do with it. I mean, I'm happy to go over there and try and borrow and scan it at a larger CPI. But 17 miles from Boston and how you take the Boston Worcester car from Park Square and so on and so forth. In fact, I just clipped something the other day that says that the trolley goes from Native Center now as far as this corner, which is where school street comes out. Mm-hmm. So that means they can get off anywhere between. To the pond. Yeah. It goes by the pond area so they can get off and go to the pond and so on and so forth. So they had access. They didn't. Before that, they had to. If they took the train out, they had to walk from Native Center to carry luggage and beach equipment. I don't know if that's a lot longer to walk. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Anyway. I just said, and I'm sorry I did not find it sooner, but there it is. Yeah. Well, I think that's very cool. I just, I don't think though, without much print it would. Translate well. Work on a sign. Yeah. You could just use the top part of it. You could with the title, Bungalow Lots. I mean, if I can, it's all very small print though, right? Even if we were to take that corner or any portion of it. And I don't know how big the brochure is. I have a feeling that's been enlarged. Well, I was just thinking just, just that top. Bungalow Lots, Wayland, 17 miles from Boston. But does that mean you'd be substituting it? I mean. Well, I don't know. I mean, we've already gotten this far. I'd hate to go back to the drawing board. Right. Because we're kind of at the finish line. Well, we are, but on the other hand, this is going to be there for years and we want it to be as accurate and as complete as possible. So, how long is Gail going to be on this mission? Several weeks, maybe a month. I don't know. Like the last years. We'd like to wrap it up before. Oh, of course. Yes. Because then we're really in trouble. And particularly because this is lumped in with the rail trail signs. They're waiting for us to finish this. Well, yes, I know they're not. All I know is I periodically get an email from Bonnie saying, how's it coming? I haven't done yet. So, that's my. That's where I get. That's where I get. That's where I get. That's where I get. Okay. I have two comments. One. I'm glad the map has been enlarged and uses up all the blank space that was in the earlier version. However, the map has been cropped so that the area where the signs will be located. It's off to the side. So, in the earlier version that we reviewed in our previous meeting, it shows that whole east side of the pond where Dudley Woods and the signs are. But that's been cropped out of this version. Well, in part because the shape has changed. So, this was horizontal. The new one is more vertical. So, that's my guess is why she did that to fit it to a different space. Well, it could be reduced where it is and not cropped so much. So, I guess the question is, which is more important, having it at a larger size so you can more easily read it, or including that east card where the woods are. So, you're looking for something this size? Well, the earlier version that we reviewed, it was a smaller map, but you could see the east side where these signs will be located on this map. And that's been cropped out in this version. The other comment I had was the credit to Wayland Historical Society. On the rail trail signs, the credit is Wayland Museum and Historical Society. So, is that intentional? No, that's just me. Do you want it the same? No, I think you do want it the same. Okay. The Wayland Historical Society is the legal name. One of the rail trail signs, Wayland Museum. Ampersand Historical Society. Okay. Thank you for catching that. So, yeah. Are there other comments on this sign? On this particular sign? On this particular sign? Mm-hmm. So, which sign are you talking about? This sign. Yeah. I would reduce the grass and try to make the buildings bigger. Uh-huh. My feeling is that seeing if we can replace this photo of the camps with the other one with the canoe in front and the camps behind is a good idea. It shows the proximity a little better. It shows the little dwellings a little better. It emphasizes the pond in the foreground. It does. More so than the field. Yeah. It does. And I guess I'm not inclined to pursue the ad. Yeah. I just don't see how it could add to this without subtracting something else. Yes. And I don't know how it could be very readable if we were to do such an option included. Are there any photos of people actually cutting the ice? Ice wasn't cut. Oh, well, the only photo I have of people cutting ice is up on Mill Pond. Ah. Not Dudley Pond. Okay. I mean, it's a generic kind of cutting of ice. And we're using that in one of the rail trail signs. Yes. That's the Mill Pond. It shows ice being cut. Can I borrow that for a minute? See the cutting the ice there on Mill Pond? Yeah. I've seen ice cutting on ponds and I think it's really interesting. But it's interesting. I will say that on your previous sign, if I could just, you know, the one underneath of that one, I kind of like the picture on top of the picture layout better than just rectangles. But that's just, again, the personal thing that I'm happy to live without it. Anything else on this one? Is there any way that if we know if Amanda has joined us? I don't see her as a participant. Okay. I'm going to Dudley Woods. Dudley Woods. So this one changed from last time by adding a couple more photos and filling up some of that space, moving some of the copy up here to the right. And otherwise, I think the copy would remain pretty much different. Part of the point is Tanya's suggestion. Right. Yeah. I like the woodchuck. It's cute. These are Brian Harris. Listen, I have three I can give you. The conservation department. He has thousands of photos of wildlife around Wayland, mostly birds. But these are all his. He gave me. I sat in the office with him and, you know, he downloaded probably 100 photos for me of the vast collection he has. Well, I too like the fact that there was an animal in there and the Native American projectile point was removed and the butterfly was in there. And I appreciate the trees filling up the space as well. The photos could be captioned all photos by Brian Harris instead of repeating his name. Four times. The only thing that bothers me and it's a personal thing is just having four pictures straight across the bottom. I was just going to say the same thing. I just feel like it's static. Compared to the others where she's moved them around, you know, and placed them differently. It's just sort of over. I'm wondering if part of the problem is that we have such dense tests on this particular one trying to boil down 15 signs to one, so to speak. Yeah, that she isn't forced to do that, but maybe she could place a couple someplace else. I don't know. I do like the trees, but. And I do think it faces out, but I just didn't like the track across the bottom. Okay. And I think Rick said the same thing last time. Right. Because previously. Right. She had the little blurb of print that she's now moved up into the trees. Kind of broke up, helped break up the bottom there. I also want to say that I like the blue background. The blue background. Right. She changed that because she didn't like the green background. So I asked her. That's for you. I think the blue background's more, makes the white print more readable, at least on the paper. I don't know. It might not have made such a difference between the two colors on the actual side, but. Suggestions on how to rearrange the pictures, but. Well, that's her job. That's right. Yeah. I couldn't say. And then, of course, putting. She lifted and tilted a little bit. Yeah. Like. Like she did for the. They. They. It didn't do. On the. On the. On the. Yeah. They. Oh. That. Mm-hmm. Something like this, where they're. You know, kind of. Because there isn't a lot of text that goes with them. And especially if. She takes the suggestion from Rick. That. Just one. Um. That's. Who. Submitted them rather than doing it four times. Mm-hmm. Okay. Anything else on this. Dudley Woods. Sign. I think that was an extremely hard. Sign. Again. Because of all the text. And. So forth. So I think. It's admirable. Very admirable. Good. And again. I want to say. Historical permission on the side. Yeah. I agree. Yeah. Okay. I want to ask a question about the Carolina. Then. Did Brian suggest this bird for this stuff? Because I thought these birds were later arrivals into New Rangler. But I wanted to check that out. Well, Brian wasn't thinking about it from a historical perspective. He was thinking about what species are here today. We have them in our backyard. Me too. But we never used to 50 years ago. So. They. But I can. I can see if that's what he was thinking of. I can understand that. Well, I think the question then is. Is. Are these meant to represent. Species from 50 years ago. Or are they meant to represent what's there today. Which is kind of how I was thinking about. Well, they are here today. Yeah. Yeah. So. I understand that. Okay. Shall we move on to Castlegate? So. On this one. The copy has changed throughout. The new information, different facts. The two side photos. We. We lost the photo of. Rose Cleveland and that whole part of the story is gone. And we're focusing on Michael Simpson and Evangeline Simpson and their stories. And then a little bit more about the house in the other caption to the house photo. I think there was only a sentence added to that. Sure. Anything else that's. In. Maybe not in the same format, but. With all information that was in the original. Not exactly. Well, we added. I added about the rice water. Rice reservoir. Yeah. Yeah. You added the whole bit about the water. You added the liquor served during the 1920s. The mansion burned down despite the snow. You added that. And then. Under the. Simpson. Caption. You. You added. Where are you. You rewrote some of it. So it's. It's new is my point. You should read it all again. Right. I think they should. Absolutely. And the QR code is not going to be put on. If we want the QR code, we can put it on. You want it. Well, I thought. I thought it was going on to relate back to the article that you wrote on our page. Right. Okay. Um. And. Yes. The question. I mean, it's fine the way it is. But. I was wondering about putting the years of life for Michael and for Evangeline. Either under their picture or next to their name or underneath their name or. Because. That's a good idea. That kind of gives a time period for people. Mm hmm. Um. And Michael's picture is so much smaller than Evangeline's. Yes. But if that goes much bigger at the top, it's going to run into the map that shows Castle Gates. Right. Well. You could put. You could put these pictures. You could put the years in parenthesis right after their names. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Um. Or underneath. Depending on what fits best. Looks best. Mm hmm. Um. But I guess my biggest question is, where did the castle come from? Mm hmm. Because. I had Tom Leshman looking through these and I looked through these and we looked on maps and everything. We cannot find any reference to the mansion being called the castle anywhere. A newspaper article. I even went through all the newspapers over at Native Public Library for this time period. And it's always been called the mansion inn or the mansion. Right. Without the inn part. Right. So if we just change it to the mansion. Yeah. Yes. Well, it could stay in quotes, I think, because that's how it was referred to back in that day. It wasn't before it became the end, which was in the 19 teens. Yeah. 1910 is when they found that Frank Simpson, that's, um, Michael's firstborn, but his first wife. No, second, second boy, um, by his first wife, uh, inherited the land. So. The map shows Castlegate South and we talked about that. Yeah. Well, Castlegate North and South did not happen until. Land development. Yes. And I have a map that shows you that when Simpson owns it, it is called Southgate. What did I do with that? What did I do with that? Not a year, a minute ago. And South Park. I mean, not Southgate, South Park. And the, and I think that's because the Mars estate was called South Park, according to the Master's Sewer Coat Society. So, uh, South, South. So, South Park. So, we bought the 81 acres north first, and then he bought 15 acres on the south side. Next. And show it over here. It's called South Park. Hmm. Maybe that's what we should call it. That was its original name. The Mars estate, not the Mansion Inn. It was called South Park. Do we have a date on this map of when this map was done and things are called Castlegate South? Maybe that should be added somewhere, you know, at the bottom of the map because the territory changed as development came in. So, D. Arthur Brown and Stackpole, who you saw on the ad for the camps, you know, they came in and they were real dealers of real estate. They, they were known under a constituent, uh, real estate trustees. And they bought up all this land and they parceled off little pieces of land. Uh, let me just show you. Well, this is what it looked like. And then, um, they made themselves their pot of money. And, um, but they would go around and they would say Wayland Manors or Wayland Farms or Woodland Estates and so forth. And these are just names that they need up to make it sound grander than it really was. What's the date of this map? I don't know. Because it says Castlegate South. And it also has a Mansion Inn on it. So it has to be out there. Yeah, and it has a Mansion Inn above that. That's right. So if you want to see what the... So if we knew the date of this, the Castlegate would be okay. But it's, but we're not talking about Castlegate. We're talking about the castle referring to the mansion, which it was never referred to as. Well, I thought somebody mentioned the... Well, I've never... It's Castlegate Pillars because that's what D. Arthur Brown named it. Okay. But not because the mansion was the... Called the castle or anything. I think it's fine to just change that heading to the mansion. Do we still want it in quotes? I don't think it should be in quotes because that implies that it was somehow titled that or... Yeah. I don't think it's necessary personally. I would think it would be easier to figure out some of these things historically. Yeah. Well, I showed you the Dudley Pond changing views. I looked in Wayland A to Z, the Wayland High School History Project. I've looked at the deeds. I've looked at other plot plans and everything else. And because I wanted to be sure what I was saying was correct. Yeah. And because we are the historical commission, we need to be correct. That's right. Yeah. I think that's... I think that's a good change. Now, we want the credit to be Wayland Museum and Historical Society. Right. Or the... Photo... Photo... The building. Now, this is just a query. On Michael Simpson's photograph, since it is so small, if we lowered it down so that maybe his name isn't being seen. I don't know. Can they made it bigger? Or do you want it there because there's writing underneath Evangeline? I don't know. Well, I think it does lend sort of a historical feel to it. Other than the photo itself, which obviously looks historic. And remember, this is a big sign. Yeah. It's not going to be... It is going to be bigger. It's small. Yeah. Well, it's just in comparison. I mean, because this is, you know, the ratio. Let me put it down. The ratio of it is so much smaller than Evangeline's. Well, why don't I find out if they can be more similar in size? Yes. And I do think the QR code leading back to the page on the commission site is a good idea. Okay. And there's space to add it down. So you may notice on the map that shows all the places that they were selling, the land that they were selling, Hawthorne Road is on it. So it's really an old road that's there. And there was a woman that lived there and changed the name of it to Hawthorne Lodge. When she sold it, she was a single lady. When she sold it, I think McMillan bought it. And he sold it to Snow, who was a high school PE teacher. And he made it into a day summer camp. And so I don't know. Apparently, there is a young man, a gentleman that remembers going to the day summer camp. And he bought a house in that area. And he said, I suddenly realized that I'm looking, when I go out my front door, I'm looking right at where the barn was. Wow. Anything else on this? I have, here's my list for this sign. To add the QR code. To add the years of life for Michael and Evangeline. To change the castle to the mansion without quotes. To change the credit to Wayland Museum and Historical Society. And to ask Carol if the photos can be more comparable in size. And the historic commission. To add the historic commission. It's the image in the brown on the historic, on the town of Wayland. Is that what it says? Yes. It's right to the middle of the map. Yeah. Is what they picked up. Because there's Dudley and Dudley. Right. It's the peninsula. On the subject of signs. As they relate to these signs. The rail trail signs. We had a zoom meeting Monday night. With Bonnie. With Bonnie and Tom Fay. And. And also the. DCR. No. Assistant town manager. Kelsey. Kelsey. Yeah. Kelsey said that because of the length of time. Since the contract. Since the contract. Was signed. For the signs. The contractor that was. Chosen can no longer keep the same crisis. So it's going to have to go out. Again. For all of these signs together. He is. It's going to go to your pressure of getting it done immediately. Well. I think that speaks to why. It's going to take a while before. Kelsey puts together another bid package. So in the short term. It may take some of the pressure off. This work immediately. Exactly. But. Now. Different. Manufacturers. Have different specifications. And. Carol. Had. Had. Used the specifications for the town's selected. Sign. Manufacturer. So if. If it's a different manufacturer. Carol may have to rework. Some of what she's done. Because the colors. And. And fonts and. And whatever. Other specifications. That the sign vendors. Specify. May change. From sign. One sign vendor. To another sign vendor. Is there money to pay her. For the extra work? Yeah. This is. The extra money. To pay her. Well. No one. Talked at the zoom meeting. About where the extra money. For the cost increase. On the signs. Is going to come from. And we didn't. Talk about. If Carol needs to rework anything. So we don't know that. As a fact. We don't know. As speculation. Well, in part because the shape has changed. So, this was horizontal. The new one is more vertical. So, that's my guess is why she did that to fit it to a different space. Well, it could be reduced where it is and not cropped so much. So, I guess the question is, which is more important, having it at a larger size so you can more easily read it, or including that east card where the woods are. So, you're looking for something this size? Well, the earlier version that we reviewed, it was a smaller map, but you could see the east side where these signs will be located on this map. And that's been cropped out in this version. The other comment I had was the credit to Wayland Historical Society. On the rail trail signs, the credit is Wayland Museum and Historical Society. So, is that intentional? No, that's just me. Do you want it the same? No, I think you do want it the same. Okay. The Wayland Historical Society is the legal name.
