One student was hurt on Tuesday morning when a small fire started in a jewelry and metalwork class at Wayland High School. The student sustained burns around 9:15 when a soldering torch was dropped and ignited a fire. A heads-up student grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the fire. The student was attended to by the school nurse before being taken to the hospital. “I would like to extend my thanks to students and staff, who were extremely supportive and flexible throughout this incident,” Principal Allyson Mizoguchi said in a memo sent to parents via ParentSquare, the school’s messaging app. “Additionally, we continue to be grateful for our partnership with local emergency personnel, whose quick and thorough response allowed us to return to learning promptly.” The north building was evacuated and the Wayland Fire Department and EMS responded. Classes reconvened shortly after the start of second block. The classroom remained closed as staff reviewed the incident.
