Support free local journalism for all of Wayland. Donate Now

Recurring donations are a big help

As we head into the holidays, we’re asking Wayland households to make a commitment that will support local news throughout the year: a recurring donation of $10 or $20 a month. If 1,000 to 2,000 households make the Post part of their annual giving, we can build the dependable support a community newspaper needs.

That is $120 to $240 a year per household. Your contribution helps keep reporting about schools, town spending and community life available to everyone who lives here.

For generations, subscriptions and advertising paid for much of the work of local newspapers. That combination no longer reliably covers the cost of local reporting in many communities. Northwestern University’s Medill Local News Initiative identifies the collapse of the traditional advertising model, and the difficulty of replacing that income with enough subscribers, as continuing obstacles for local news.

Our advertisers remain important partners. Their support helps us publish, and their businesses help make Wayland a community. Reader donations must also be a continuing part of paying for the Post. We have chosen to make our print and online journalism available free, so access to local information does not depend on a household’s ability to pay.

Nearby nonprofit newspapers are asking residents to make that same commitment. The Concord Bridge reports that advertising and reader donations provide roughly equal shares of its support, and it urges readers to find a contribution they can repeat each year. Winchester News encourages monthly giving because it provides predictable income.

Think of your donation as your household’s contribution to a local institution that serves the whole town. You help make the news available to your own family and to neighbors who cannot afford to contribute. You help ensure that someone is following public decisions even when you cannot attend the meeting yourself.

That work continues after the first story appears. A proposal changes. A vote is postponed. A cost estimate rises. Reporting means returning to the documents and asking follow-up questions so residents can understand what happened and what comes next.

The bills continue, too. Reporting and editing take time. Each print edition brings production and delivery costs, while our website and other services require ongoing support. Regular donations help us plan assignments and meet those obligations with greater confidence.

We are grateful for larger gifts, including the $5,000 memorial-fund contribution acknowledged in our recent campaign update. Our long-term goal is to share the responsibility among many households. A broad base of regular donors reduces our financial dependence on any single contributor and gives the newspaper a more dependable future.

Our reported operating expenses are about $11,725 a month, equivalent to $140,700 over a full year at that rate. One thousand households giving $10 a month would provide $120,000 a year toward those costs. The same number giving $20 a month, or 2,000 households giving $10, would provide $240,000 annually, before payment-processing fees.

Together with advertising and other gifts, that level of participation could cover ongoing expenses and give us room to build reserves and strengthen our reporting. The amount each household can sustain, and the number that participate, will determine what becomes possible.

Our documented fundraising total has reached at least $22,369 toward our $35,000 goal. That includes the $19,229 previously reported and $3,140 in online donations received after Oct. 19, through Nov. 2. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. The campaign goal represents roughly three months of operating expenses. Regular giving can help us plan for the months and years beyond this campaign.

If you have already made a gift, thank you. Please consider making your support recurring. If you have been reading the Post and have not yet contributed, we invite you to become one of the households that keep it going. Choose an amount you can comfortably continue. A smaller monthly gift is welcome, and those who can give more help extend the benefit to everyone.

A monthly contribution spreads your annual support across the year. If you prefer to give annually, please make $120 or $240 part of your giving each year. The Post is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Checks payable to Wayland Post can be mailed to P.O. Box 146, Wayland, MA 01778.

Please visit waylandpost.org/donate now and set up a recurring donation of $10 or $20 a month. Your continuing support will help keep local journalism available to Wayland year after year.
