Wayland residents including seniors have been looking forward to the opening of the town’s new Community Center for a long time but the opening will be here soon. The estimated completion date is March 31, 2025.  The Council on Aging will move into the Community Center which is located in Town Center, across from the entrance to Russell’s Garden Center, in early April.

As of late February, most of the outdoor site work is complete, including paving, sidewalks, a stone dust path, lighting, and landscaping. The electric vehicle chargers are installed. The metal roof, exterior siding, and trim installation work is complete. The interior rough utility installation for the fire protection system, electrical and HVAC & plumbing is complete. The interior drywall, millwork, and interior painting are nearing completion. Over the next month, the ACT ceiling and flooring will be installed. Audio-visual equipment will be installed, along with fiber optic cables.

Mark your calendars for the Grand Opening event for the whole community on Thursday, June 5 from 4 to 8pm. All ages will gather to celebrate with community center tours, music, food, games, activities, and a very special show at 7pm by a renowned illusionist! Stay tuned for more details

Do You Have Some Time to Give to Wayland’s Seniors?

The Council on Aging is looking for volunteers who can address minor household problems for seniors and who can drive seniors to appointments.

The COA’s In-Home Fix-It volunteers help seniors with small tasks that don’t require professional help, such as changing lightbulbs or batteries, switching curtains on rods, and investigating sticky doors or drawers. Volunteers do not move heavy objects, do yard work, or perform plumbing or electrical tasks.

Volunteer drivers take seniors to appointments when they have no other way to get there. Most appointments are in the local MetroWest area, but drivers who are willing to go into Boston are also needed.

Both volunteer roles are flexible: Accept the assignments that work for you. Training is provided.

To volunteer, contact Ann Gordon at the COA: agordon@wayland.ma.us or 508-358-2990.

Feel the joy of helping your neighbors – this is what community is all about!
