The once-vacant parking lot at 297 Boston Post Road is now often filled with cars — many from out of state — as curious shoppers explore Terrain, which opened Aug. 26.

The shopping center sat largely vacant for many years after Whole Foods, the anchor tenant, closed in 2017. The remaining businesses left soon after.

Urban Outfitters launched Terrain in 2008 after acquiring J. Franklin Styer Nurseries in Pennsylvania. Urban Outfitters also owns Free People, FP Movement, Nuuly, and Menus & Venues.

Wayland Terrain, the company’s first Massachusetts location, is Anthropologie Group’s home and garden lifestyle brand. The store includes a home and garden shop, all-season nursery, cafe, and event venue. It also offers design services both in-store and at customers’ homes.

The retail space features displays of plants, home decor, floral arrangements, and botanical gifts in a tranquil setting. According to one manager, a customer arrived shortly after opening saying she had endured a hectic morning and came to Terrain to decompress.

At the grand opening, Terrain Managing Director Beth Smith described the company’s vision.

“Terrain is about more than shopping. It’s about celebrating the seasons, connecting with nature, and creating spaces that bring people together,” Smith said. “We’re thrilled to bring that vision to Wayland and become part of this community.”

Field Manager Allison Wiley said Wayland was selected because of its strong local character and the connection to the Anthropologie brand.

“Wayland is such a special community, and we’re excited to become part of its vibrant local landscape,” Wiley said. “There’s already a strong connection to Anthropologie throughout the greater Boston area, and we’re looking forward to welcoming both longtime customers and those discovering Terrain for the first time.”

Wiley said that while Terrain’s offerings remain consistent across locations, the company incorporates products that appeal to each community.

“Our nursery takes that a step further, offering a selection of native plants that connects the store more intentionally to the local landscape and gardening community,” she said.

The design service handles a variety of projects, including wedding and event floral design, holiday decorating, container and doorstep arrangements, and indoor plant styling, Wiley said. The store also offers predesigned floral arrangements for gifts, entertaining, and special occasions.

In the cafe, diners are surrounded by layered greenery, climbing tropical plants, and hanging air plants. The waiting area resembles a comfortable family living room.

All Terrain cafes share the same seasonal menu. However, some beverage offerings, including beer and wine selections, are tailored to regional tastes. “What truly makes each location unique are local purveyor partners, whom we source ingredients from whenever possible,” said Brianna Alcorn, director of sales and marketing for Menus & Venues.

Alcorn identified several Massachusetts suppliers, including Savenor’s Market, North Coast Seafoods, Pig Rock Sausages, Little Leaf Farms, Jim’s Organic Coffee, and Great Hill Dairy. She said the Wayland cafe, with seating for 170 guests and a sprawling bar, is the company’s largest.

Terrain Gardens at Wayland Village, the company’s event venue, can accommodate 178 guests for a seated reception and 200 for a cocktail-style event, according to Alcorn.

For weddings, the venue includes a dedicated ceremony room with a neutral design. The main reception space features barnwood floors, custom millwork, vintage-style chandeliers, and views of the wetlands and Sandy Burr Country Club golf course.

Every event includes Terrain’s in-house catering service, Alcorn said. Wedding clients also have access to two on-site preparation suites throughout the day.

Alcorn said presales for Terrain Gardens at Wayland Village began in December 2025 and the venue is currently booking events through 2028. The space has already hosted several gatherings, including weddings, social events, networking functions and charitable events.

The company also plans to host community events. On Sept. 26, Terrain held an Autumn Bounty Market featuring local vendors and live music.

In addition to Wayland, Terrain operates locations in Glen Mills, Penn., its original site; Westport, Conn.; Devon and Doylestown, Penn.; Bethesda, Md.; Palo Alto and Walnut Creek, Calif.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Franklin, Tenn.
