In girls’ varsity cross country on Sept. 16, the Wayland duo of Ava Miller and Ivy Robertson took over the top two spots near the aqueduct behind the school, with Miller going on to win after a storming finish to the line and leading the Warriors to a 27-29 victory over Boston Latin.
Behind the Wayland top two, an intriguing race developed with Latin taking the next three spots, while Henrietta Schoeffler and Brynn Andrus secured sixth and seventh place, respectively, for Wayland. The home team’s fifth finisher was senior co-captain Cordia Wang. Rookies Lily Hage and Anya Brown completed Wayland’s top seven with senior co-captain Ainsley Jay rounding out the WHS group.
The Wayland boys also used the home course to their advantage, moving up in the field and winning key battles within the race. Brandon Hopps pulled away from Latin’s top runner and Ryan Foley came in third to power Wayland to a 27-29 win. Ryan Young took sixth, and Archie Baker, Elliot Hopper and Reese Migdal came in eighth through 10th.
In the boys’ JV race, ninth-grader Henry Vukson picked up where he left off from the previous week’s race with another victory. A parade of Wayland runners were bunched in the top 10 overall, including Wyatt Ciccarelli, Griffin Jorgensen, Caleb Grace, David McLaughlin, and Drake LeBaron, who finished within six seconds of each other.
The teams will race next on Sept. 26 at the Frank Kelley Invitational at the Wrentham Developmental Center on a 3-kilometer layout.
Field hockey
Wayland and Weston battled to a 3-3 deadlock in a very competitive game on Sept. 15.
Junior Mackenzie Grogan led the offense with two goals, while senior Melina Antun added another. Defensively, sophomore Brooke Macfarlane had an excellent game, and senior Frankie Zilembo was also a major presence in the backfield.
“Overall, I thought we played extremely well and showed a lot of composure against a strong Weston team,” said coach Sarah Woodside. “It was a strong team performance overall and a good example of the progress we’re continuing to make.”
The Warriors are still searching for their first win of the fall.
Boys’ soccer
Boys’ soccer remains the hottest team in town racing out to a 5-0 record. The Warriors beat Sutton High School 4-0 on Monday, blanked Weston High School 2-0 on Wednesday, then outlasted Reading Memorial 4-3 on Saturday at Stadium Field. Last week the Warriors opened the season with 6-1 wins over Natick and Dedham.
Girls’ soccer
Girls’ soccer had a strong week of its own, beating Nipmuc Regional High School 5-1 on Monday and Maynard High School 2-0 on Saturday, with a scoreless tie at Weston sandwiched in between.
Football
Football stayed unbeaten as well, beating Ashland 35-14 on the road Friday night to follow up last week’s 35-0 rout of Hopkinton High School.
Volleyball
The girls’ volleyball team went 2-1 in three matches, beating Bedford High School 3-0 in sets on Monday and rallying to beat Concord-Carlisle High School 3-1 on Friday, but getting swept 3-0 at Weston in between. The freshman squad went 2-0 on the week, beating Bedford and Concord-Carlisle.
Golf
Boys’ golf lost twice, falling 276-240 to Concord-Carlisle and 241-229 to Newton South High School, extending its season-opening winless skid.
Town sports
The Alpine Fields renovation, once expected to reopen this fall, will instead stay closed until spring 2027; DPW officials said the new turf needs another season to establish itself, a decision made harder by ongoing drought conditions that have limited watering. The town’s $100,000 annual capital allocation for field upgrades went this year toward Alpine, the high school’s varsity baseball field and irrigation work at Claypit Hill, with a fresh $100,000 available again next fiscal year.
