Volleyball Reaches Elite Eight

Wayland High School’s fall athletics season came to an emotional close with dramatic playoff runs, standout performances, and a decisive win on the gridiron. While volleyball continues its march into the MIAA Division 2 Elite Eight, boys soccer and football concluded their seasons with a mix of hard-fought battles and lessons learned on the field.

The Wayland girls volleyball team continued its postseason surge with back-to-back sweeps over Somerset-Berkley and Billerica to advance to the Division 2 Elite Eight. Ranked seventh in the state bracket, the Warriors powered past Somerset-Berkley 3–0 on Nov. 1 and followed with another dominant 3–0 victory against Billerica on Nov. 4. The team now travels to Duxbury for a quarterfinal matchup. Senior standout Anna Yalli earned MetroWest Daily News recognition among the week’s top seven athletes for her leadership and consistent hitting, helping drive the Warriors’ playoff momentum.

Boys Soccer: Warriors Fall in Round of 32 After Competitive Late Season

The Wayland boys soccer team entered the Division 2 state playoffs after a difficult stretch to end the regular season, including a 3–0 loss to Newton South on Oct. 28. The Warriors, ranked 112th statewide, showed grit against higher-seeded opponents but ultimately fell 2–1 to Ashland in the Round of 32 on Nov. 4.

Earlier in the season, Wayland had edged Ashland 2–1 at home in September and entered the playoff rematch seeking to repeat that success. Despite a strong defensive showing, Ashland took the lead in the second half and held on through overtime, ending Wayland’s season at 5–8–4. The game marked a reversal of fortunes from the Warriors’ perfect 4–0 record against the Clockers in previous years

Football: From Rivalry Defeat to Dominant Rebound

On the gridiron, the Warriors endured a 35–0 loss to Lincoln-Sudbury on Oct. 30, their fourth straight home defeat at that point. Lincoln-Sudbury improved to 8–1 overall, while Wayland dropped to 1–7. The defeat came just a week after Wayland had posted a season-high 48 points in a win over Waltham.

Showing resilience, the Warriors bounced back in commanding fashion against Belmont on Nov. 7, winning 40–0 at home. The shutout snapped a four-game losing streak and lifted Wayland’s record to 2–7. The offensive explosion was a sharp turnaround from the previous week’s struggles, and the team’s defensive line dominated throughout the matchup, preventing Belmont from scoring in any quarter.

The Warriors close the season with momentum heading into Thanksgiving week, when they are scheduled to face Weston in the traditional holiday rivalry game.
