The third annual Eric Schwartz Wiffle Ball Tournament — held at the Eric Schwartz Ballpark that was created by Eric’s children Jack, Maddy, and Isabel as a tribute to their dad’s legacy of mentorship, fun and community spirit — took place Nov. 22.
Schwartz spent many years coaching youth baseball throughout Wayland and MetroWest, believing deeply in the power of sports to build confidence and life skills in young athletes. That philosophy was on view all day as friends, families, and former players came together to play, cheer, and support a cause that reflected his values.
Sixteen teams participated in a friendly round-robin tournament, raising $7,000 for Wayland Little League to support field maintenance, equipment and scholarships. Adding to the excitement, New York Yankee newcomer and local athlete Ben Rice, Jack’s former high school teammate and friend, donated a signed jersey for the silent auction.

The tournament champions, Team GLF, had only four players: former Intercity Baseball League Blue Sox members Pat McGowan, Austin Masel, and Gavin Dauer, along with former Tufts baseball player and current assistant coach Miles Reid. They defeated a team of alumni from the Nokona Baseball Club in a spirited and good-natured final matchup.
Participants ranged in from 20 to 60 years old, underscoring the event’s lighthearted motto: you’re never too old for playground games.
“Coming out to this event every year is super important,” said Jack Cappellucci, a WHS 2019 graduate. “Coach Schwartz was a fundamental member of the Wayland community and our childhood.”
