The Select Board voted unanimously Sept. 8 to commend Wayland police and firefighters who responded to the fatal Aug. 18 emergency at Camp Chickami. Certificates recognized 12 individual first responders.
Acting Police Chief Mark Hebert also told the board that more than 100 paid traffic details had gone unfilled over the summer. The board voted 5-0 to classify a new part-time civilian traffic-controller position as a special municipal employee, allowing qualified civilians and certain municipal employees to perform paid traffic-detail work under state ethics rules.
The board approved a $7,000 grant to Arts Wayland for the Oct. 3 Wayland Festival using Town Center gift funds. Member Christopher Reynolds abstained.
Members also authorized Town Manager Michael McCall to sign a $150,000 contract with Pare Corp. for the Loker Street Crossing Replacement Project.
During a discussion of a possible Proposition 2½ operating override, the board reviewed an updated financial forecast showing a projected fiscal 2028 first-year deficit of approximately $831,000, down from about $2.7 million in an earlier June forecast. Members discussed whether to hold a public forum before determining whether and when an override question should go to voters.
