The Recreation Commission heard Sept. 15 that users of Cochituate Park had noticed substantial improvements in field conditions.
The Recreation Department reported receiving a written compliment from an Eastern Massachusetts senior men’s softball league saying conditions were among the best the league had experienced there. A commission participant who plays softball also praised the Cochituate fields.
Members discussed changes in Department of Public Works staffing and said newer personnel brought broader experience maintaining baseball fields. The Recreation Department said complaints now tend to focus more on the shortage of available fields than on their condition.
The department also reported that Alpine Field remained under renovation and likely would not reopen until spring after the drought slowed establishment of the playing surface. Irrigation work at Claypit Hill fields remained underway.
