Sherman’s Bridge to close for 12 weeks beginning Nov. 9

Sherman’s Bridge detour plan shows alternate Sudbury River crossings on Routes 27 and 117 during the bridge’s planned closure beginning Nov. 9.

Sherman’s Bridge, which crosses the Sudbury River between Wayland and Sudbury, is scheduled to close to all traffic Monday, Nov. 9, for a rehabilitation project expected to take about 12 weeks.

The towns anticipate reopening the bridge by Feb. 1, 2027, weather and conditions permitting, according to a construction notice from the Sudbury Public Works Department. No access across the bridge will be allowed during construction, and unforeseen circumstances could change the schedule.

Detour signs will be posted throughout the project. Alternate river crossings will be on Routes 27 and 117, with connections along Route 126 and Concord Road.

Reconstructed in 1992, the bridge carries Sherman’s Bridge Road in Wayland across the river to Lincoln Road in Sudbury near the Sudbury unit of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Town officials say the bridge remains safe for travel, but the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has identified significant structural repairs as a high priority.

Planned work includes replacing the wooden deck with a laminated timber deck, installing crash-tested railings and approach guardrails, and making targeted structural repairs, according to the towns’ project website.
