Wayland Muslim Neighbors hosted a Community Iftar at the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland on March 28th. Iftar signifies the end of the daily fast during Ramadan, which Muslims observe from sunrise to sunset. Iftar is a time for gratitude, reflection, and strengthening community bonds. Family, friends, and community gather at sunset to share food and to enjoy each other’s company. While dates and water are traditional, Iftar meals can include a wide variety of dishes, reflecting local traditions and preferences. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, a holy month of fasting, worship, and spiritual reflection for Muslims worldwide. Muslims consider it a time for self-improvement, heightened devotion, and increased charity and good deeds.
Wayland Muslim Neighbors (WMN) was created by a group of Wayland residents to foster connection and community. The evening event was hosted by Asma Khan and Toufic Hirbli of WMN. The program included a recitation of Quran by Abdallah Hassan, a local youth who attended summer classes at Al Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. Other speakers included ICB Wayland President Noura Guermazi, Wayland HS graduate Noreen Javed and Wayland residents Najiba Akbar and Bilal Kaleem.
