Esther J. (Nisbet) Deveaux, 93, a lifelong resident of Cochituate, died peacefully in the care and comfort of her family on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

She was born in Framingham, the daughter of the late Hiram Nisbet and Olive E. (Maynard) Nisbet. She is survived by her loving and devoted children, Debra M. Deveaux and her life partner Michael Rando of Framingham; Donna D. Keane and her husband Andrew of Cochituate, and David A. Deveaux and his wife Gerilyn of East Lyme, CT. Cherished grandmother of Kathryn E. Carapellucci and her wife Sam of Salem; Kevin A. Keane and his wife Michelle of Waltham, and Steven L. Deveaux and Jennifer Dill of Lyme, CT. Treasured wife for 54 years of the late Albert V. “Al” Deveaux and sister of the late Amy Nisbet.

Esther’s roots in Cochituate spanned a lifetime; she graduated from Wayland High School with the Class of 1949, spent years behind the counter of her family’s variety store, started and raised a family with Al, and became a pillar of the many groups and communities that she devoted her time to. Esther and her family owned and operated Nisbet’s Variety at the corner of Main St and Dudley Rd. Whether delivering letters, helping those in need make ends meet, or sneaking a penny candy to a youngster, Esther cared for and gave generously to all. She was a fixture in the neighborhood, always offering a kind word, helping hand, and bright smile.

Esther was a lifelong member of the Community United Methodist Church. She took great pride singing in the choir, crafting Christmas trees that still light up holiday displays each year for the annual fair, and supporting the Church’s many initiatives, festivals, and traditions.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Esther’s family was the center of her life. While her selfless dedication to those around her can be seen in the wonderful family that she and Al built, it will be the little things like her bottomless beach bag of candies and goodies, her marshaling of the kids, grandkids and cousins together for an ice cream truck trip at West Dennis beach, leading the family in song around the Christmas table after opening stockings, or her loud cowbell at the kids’ sports games letting them know that she was there rooting them on that will bring the fondest memories to those who had the privilege of calling her Mom, Grammy, Auntie Esther, or just Es.
