The Design Review Board convened on March 14, 2025, to discuss signage applications for Jersey Mike’s and a follow-up regarding Wayland Pack and Ship.

Sean McGlone, accompanied by his sales colleague Laura Young, outlined their request for signage at the Jersey Mike’s location going in where Loyal Companion had been at Route 30 and Main Street. Each sign measured 29 by 200 inches and featured backlit channel letters with a halo lighting effect. McGlone clarified that the signs would not be internally illuminated which is not permitted under the town’s zoning bylaw.

The board members expressed concerns about the size of the signs, which, at nearly 40 square feet each, exceed the typical 20-square-foot total limit allowed for individual signage in the area. Chair Bill Sterling noted that the zoning board of appeals (ZBA) would need to approve any exceptions, particularly for larger signs or multiple facades.

The board reached a consensus, recommending approval for the signage with the condition that the final size complies with zoning bylaws and the lighting adheres to the halo-backlit requirement with no internal lighting. The motion passed with the understanding that the revised plans would be submitted for ZBA approval.

No representative from Wayland Pack and Ship was present. Their signage application was incomplete regarding the sign size or design to make an informed decision. The applicant had already replaced an old sign without prior approval, and the new sign, which was installed on a kiosk on Route 20, appeared to be larger than allowed under town zoning guidelines.

The board members decided to recommend denying the application due to the lack of essential information until further information was provided, particularly regarding the original sign’s dimensions and approval status.
