Board of Assessors

The Board of Assessors voted unanimously Sept. 14 to accept the town’s fiscal 2026 Community Preservation Act surcharge filing, which showed $1,250,172.14 in committed surcharges and a net surcharge of $1,244,276.85 after exemptions, abatements and adjustments.

Members also discussed the possibility that the Economic Development Committee could advocate separate commercial and residential tax rates. Assessor Steven Klitgord questioned whether shifting a greater share of the tax burden to commercial properties could instead cause the town to lose some of its commercial tax base.

The board reviewed preliminary assessments for 59 Wayland Affordable Housing properties showing an average increase in assessed value of $22,368. Members also discussed adding a cost-of-living adjustment to veterans’ property tax exemptions and asked for a calculation of the total cost across all applicable exemption categories.

The Select Board’s classification hearing to set the fiscal 2027 tax rate was announced for Nov. 16 at 7:15 p.m.
