Wayland football improves to 5–1

Wayland football continued its strong season on Friday, Oct. 16, improving to 5–1 with a 47–30 victory over Acton-Boxborough.

Leading the offensive attack was quarterback Mikey Johansson, who completed 10 of 19 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Brajae Walton had another outstanding performance, rushing for 109 yards on 14 carries and scoring three touchdowns.

Defensively, Hayden Duffy and Alex Galper led the way for the Warriors. Galper and Duffy made an immediate impact, recording a safety on the very first play of the game to get Wayland off to a strong start and set the tone for the night.

The Warriors dropped their first game of the season on Oct. 9 when Lincoln-Sudbury prevailed, 45-42.

Crew

The Wayland/Weston Crew team competed in the Head of the Charles regatta Oct. 17-18 where the boys and girls boats placed 54th and 60th, respectively, in Youth Eights (out of 80+ boats in each event). This is a very competitive event featuring crews from all over the country as well as a number of international crews. The team is back on the water at home, preparing for the MPSRA State Championship this coming weekend.

Girls’ soccer

The girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a stretch that saw them go 1-1-1.

On Oct. 13, Corinne Larsen and Sloane DiRoberto both scored in a 2-0 victory over Boston Latin. Sazie Wrentmore assisted on both tallies. Rival Lincoln-Sudbury handed the Warriors (8-1-3) a 2-1 defeat on Oct. 15. Georgia Cinti scored from an assist by Olivia Umina. Goalies Grace DiStefano and Rosie O’Hara combined for a shutout in a 0-0 draw against Grafton on Oct. 17.

Cross country

The second of two home dual meets this season was a compelling day of racing against Bedford under sunny skies. The status of this event was up in the air until the day before the meet due to unforeseen changes to an area of the course behind the stadium scoreboard. Thankfully the Wayland DPW was able to mitigate damage on the course in time.

In the girls varsity race, Wayland’s top duo of Ava Miller and Ivy Robertson steadily pulled away from the rest of the field to take first and second overall. Behind them a fascinating duel unfolded between Bedford’s top runner and Henrietta Schoeffler, with the Bedford runner prevailing. Wayland’s top five was filled out by Lily-Rose Hage and Cordia Wang. In the end, Bedford had enough depth to take the meet, 29-30.

The boys varsity was the final race of the day. The pair of Brandon Hopps and Ryan Foley once again led the charge taking the top two places. Bedford got the next two spots, but the trio of Ryan Young, Elliot Hopper, and Archie Baker took the next three spots, cementing the win with a 21-34 score.

Boys’ soccer

Boys’ soccer bounced back from last week’s streak-ending loss with a statement result, beating Boston Latin, 7-2 on the road Oct. 13. But the Warriors could not carry that momentum into Thursday’s home game against Lincoln-Sudbury, falling 1-0 in a tight, defensive battle at Stadium Field.

Girls’ volleyball

The Warriors fell 3-1 at Lincoln-Sudbury on Oct. 13, then regrouped to beat Concord-Carlisle 3-1 three days later at home.

Field hockey

Field hockey’s difficult stretch continued. The Warriors were shut out 9-0 at Lincoln-Sudbury on Oct. 13, and fell 3-0 at home to Concord-Carlisle on Oct. 16.
